APT stands for annotation processing tool and was first included in JDK v1.5. It makes it possible to inject annotation processors in the compile process, so one can for example verify stuff that the compiler does not check and emit compile errors/warnings or generate extra code that will be compiled in a later pass. Unfortunately, there are 2 different versions of the API, one for 1.5 and one for 1.6 and up. To enable real compile time verification of the enum vs properties file, an APT plugin can be used. This can check that all enums has a property and all properties has an enum and fail the build if something is missing.
