The format() method in the Layout interface takes an object that represents an event (of any type) and returns a String. A synopsis of the Layout interface is shown below.

But the format method does not exist in the interface definition immediately following; nor does it exist in the source definition of Layout to which that page links; nor does it exist in any of its superclasses.
