Ceki, thanks for the advice.  Maybe the "file" property in RollingFileAppender is causing the problem at month's end.  The problem could also be because of not using prudent mode, which was a calculated risk that I may have to back off.  (I've never seen any records intermixed, so I thought the performance tradeoff might be worth it.)  Anyway, thanks for taking a look at my configuration.
