I am interested in a BZ2 compression as well. I know this ticket is two years old, but BZ2 is gaining popularity. The <big phone company> group that I work for compresses all log files with this format. BZ2 is growing in popularity and is pretty well established now. Apache Commons Compression project would be an additional dependency needed to make this happen as BZ2 is not supported in the native java.util.zip package.
