Configuring Exception logging

Suppose I have this Java code: try { // ... } catch (Exception ex) { logger.error("Something went wrong", ex); } I want to choose at runtime if a specific Logger should log the exception's stacktrace or just its message. Is this possible with Logback? Thanks in advance, Daniel Serodio

Basic example of programmatically setting the configuration

I've just started to set up an environment with logback, but found examples for programmatically configuring logback limited, or a mix of solutions for a number of different logger interfaces. As such I hope that the code below helps someone in the future as an example. Splitting log files by session

I am developing an application where I need to make separate log files for each time a certain process is run. This process can have multiple instances at once. Preferably I would like a separate method for these types of logs (like info, warning, trace etc) but I would be okay with simply using trace for these logs. I would still like any error or warning that spawns in this process to be logged to the standard error file (global for entire project). I'm trying to configure logback to do this for me. My initial idea was to create my own appender, and somehow figure out which process the log request was coming from, but I ran into a problem actually doing that, since I apparently cannot pass anything useful to the appender in runtime? Or rather I'm not sure how to keep track of and always use the appender that belongs to that particular process. I then proceeded to get lost in the vast number of classes and I am now looking at perhaps modifying a RollingPolicy to do my bidding. Any ideas or clarifications on this topic would be very welcome.

GSiftingAppender

Hi, I make heavy use of the GSiftingAppender but found that is no longer supported since 1.0.12. Currently I stick with 1.0.11 for this reason, but don't feel very comfortable with it on long term. I actually prefer the groovy configuration and I believe the things I'm doing can not easily be achieved with xml configuration. What options do I have? Any hints on how to migrate to the current version? Many thanks Jürgen

How to reload logback configuration ?

Hi, I am using external properties file(process_settings.properties) for variable substitution to programmatically configure the following logger parameters: BACKUP_COUNT (backup history) FILE_SIZE LOG_LEVEL >From my application, after I set the above mentioned params in properties file, I want the logback configuration(and hence the new properties file) to be reloaded and restarted again. For that I am doing: LoggerContext loggerContext = (LoggerContext) LoggerFactory.getILoggerFactory(); loggerContext.reset(); ContextInitializer ci = new ContextInitializer(loggerContext); ci.autoConfig(); On restart, logback.xml is not using the updated properties file, instead it is still substituting values which were set previously. Please suggest how to restart logback such that the updated properties file is picked up. Hello, When I use Log4j, I can add MDC properties to LogginEvent<http://logging.apache.org/log4j/1.2/apidocs/org/apache/log4j/spi/LoggingEve…>by using RewriteAppender<http://logging.apache.org/log4j/1.2/apidocs/org/apache/log4j/rewrite/Rewrit…>. It's possible because log4j's LoggingEvent is not an interface and it has setProperty()<http://logging.apache.org/log4j/1.2/apidocs/org/apache/log4j/spi/LoggingEve…>method. Is it possible to add or modify MDC properties dynamically in Logback? The reason I need to change MDC properties using appenders is because of some logs from unaccessible threads. I want to add hostname, application name and some of server's infomation to the logs then transfer the logs event to the central log receiver. Thanks.

Setting logback.xml parameters programmatically

Hi, Need some pointers regarding the following: Requirement: For logging, user configures following parameters from Application (UI): Log Level File Size Number Of Log Files Time Zone Above mentioned parameters needs to be programmatically set to logback.xml using ch.qos.logback API's. We tried to implement in the following way but there seems to be some missing link, please suggest how to achieve the above mentioned requirement. Do we need to link the policy with File Appender ? Logging the JARs name

Hello, community. I use logback in OSGI environemnt. But actually the question is not only OSGI related. So, I have a JAR / Bundle with my subprogram. The bundle runs in an OSGI framework together with other bundles. What I want is that all logs of my bundle are marked with the bundle name, so that it becomes easier to read the log file afterwards. Consider that other bundle also log into the same file. Logback provides the ability to log class names of the callers, but that is not what I want. I got lots of classes in my application, but I want to see whether the log was generated by my bundle or not at first. What would be the best way to accomplish that? Is it possible anyway? Sequence number

Hi everyone: I'm writing to all of you because I want to display a sequence number for each event. I've done some research regarding this and I know for sure that LogBack is not able to natively handle this as Log4j2 does with %sn, or as JUL partially does with getSequenceNumber() (I won't be changing LogBack because of this, anyway). I know for sure LogBack is lacking this functionality because of this issue on JIRA: http://jira.qos.ch/browse/LOGBACK-546 That issue is a four years old boy now. I found a link on Stack Overflow ( http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11162951/line-numbers-with-logback) which lead me to the following link: http://logback.qos.ch/manual/layouts.html#customConversionSpecifier I tried a static number but it was shared across threads so it didn't work that well. I also thought of ThreadLocal but I read a story which freaked me out: http://niklasschlimm.blogspot.com/2012/04/threading-stories-threadlocal-in-… Does anyone know of a good way to achieve sequentials?
