Why does DBAppender slow down logging although it has a non-matching filter?

Hello there, we are using TomEE, SLF4J and Logback. Our aim is to log certain logging statements into a database (determined by a marker), in addition to the stdout. Here is our logback configuration: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <configuration> <appender name="STDOUT" class="ch.qos.logback.core.ConsoleAppender"> <encoder>...</encoder> </appender> <appender name="DB" class="ch.qos.logback.classic.db.DBAppender"> <connectionSource class="ch.qos.logback.core.db.DriverManagerConnectionSource"> <driverClass>oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver</driverClass> <url>...</url> </connectionSource> <filter class="ch.qos.logback.core.filter.EvaluatorFilter"> <evaluator class="ch.qos.logback.classic.boolex.OnMarkerEvaluator"> <marker>LOGDATABASE</marker> </evaluator> </filter> </appender> <root level="info"> <appender-ref ref="STDOUT" /> <appender-ref ref="DB" /> </root> </configuration> TomEE (which is configured to use SLF4J) takes about 3 times longer to startup if the DBAppender is active (14 seconds compared to 4 seconds). Although the filtering works and there are no log entries in the database for the tomcat startup. I already know that I could use connection pooling to speed up when it actually comes to database logging. But nevertheless the filter should do it in this case. My suspicion is that there are connections opened and closed during logging, even if the log statement is filtered out. Or are there any other ideas why this is so slow? Best regards, Simon Erhardt

Configure logback within an EAR

Hello, I am trying to convert our web applications which are packaged within EARs to use logback instead of log4j. I would like to separate the log messages for each application into their own log file. I'm having an issue with shared EJBs within each EAR not logging to the same log file as the web-apps. The shared EJBs all use static logger references. My artifacts are packaged as follows: EAR1.ear EJB_shared.jar Web_app_1.war EAR2.ear EJB_shared.jar Web_app_2.war Using the ContextJNDISelector and SiftingAppenders I am able to separate the log messages for the web apps, but the EJB log messages are not being logged. I'm thinking this is due to the EJB not have the same context (or an context?) as the web apps so they are not getting picked up by the SiftingAppender with my logback config xml? Is there a standard way to configure logback so that the shared EJBs are included? Do I need to move the logback config xml to the EAR? Is this a issue with how we are packaging our EARs? I can provide my logback config and other config if needed. Thanks, Chris

weird RollingFileAppender behavior if not building a full date string

Hi, I've been evaluating logback for a project and started playing with a RollingFileAppender. Using 1.1.2 I was getting some strange behavior, including missing several log events with a very simple test program. I finally tracked it back to the definition of the rotate interval. I had this: <rollingPolicy class="ch.qos.logback.core.rolling.TimeBasedRollingPolicy"> <fileNamePattern>${userid}/${userid}.%d{yyyy-MM-dd-mm}.log</fileNamePattern> <maxHistory>30</maxHistory> </rollingPolicy> and was trying to roll over every minute. Simple test program: Logger logger = LoggerFactory.getLogger(LogbackTest.class); MDC.put("userid", "chris"); for (int i = 0; i < 30; i++) { logger.debug("Hello World {}", i); try { Thread.sleep(5000); } catch (Exception e) { } } What I found was the first file created, the minute when the process started, was either missing the first 2-5 log entries or the file was missing. If you look closely at the fileNamePattern you'll see I forgot to add the hour to the format. Changing to: <fileNamePattern>${userid}/${userid}.%d{yyyy-MM-dd-HH-mm}.log.gz</fileNamePattern> Worked as expected. While the mistake was on my side, why would leaving off the hours cause data to be missing? No errors, printing the LoggerContext after it was done running didn't show any errors either. I did remove the files between runs, so there was no chance of a file already existing. Thanks, Chris

If you add the jar files to C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\lib\ext . and try to run the program like below: - \logback>java Logback it wont see the logback.xml file in the source directory when i deleted the - logback-access-1.1.2.jar - logback-classic-1.1.2.jar - logback-core-1.1.2.jar - slf4j-api-1.7.6.jar files from C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\lib\ext, it went OK! RollingFileAppender does not roll after max size exceeds

Hello, I am using using logback version 1.0.9 with slf4j 1.7.2. I see my log file not getting rolled over even after the maxFileSize exceeds. I see that the new logs are still logged to the same file and its size continuously increasing. My configuration is as below <appender name="WEB_LOG" class="ch.qos.logback.core.rolling.RollingFileAppender"> <file>web.log</file> <rollingPolicy class="ch.qos.logback.core.rolling.FixedWindowRollingPolicy"> <fileNamePattern>web%i.log</fileNamePattern> <minIndex>1</minIndex> <maxIndex>9</maxIndex> </rollingPolicy> <triggeringPolicy class="ch.qos.logback.core.rolling.SizeBasedTriggeringPolicy"> <maxFileSize>20MB</maxFileSize> </triggeringPolicy> <encoder> <pattern>%date [%thread] %-5level %logger{36} %line - %msg%n</pattern> </encoder> </appender> The current log file size is over 55 mb. I would like to know if there is any information that I could capture while this issue is seen in the production environment since I assume this would be a rare bug being seen. Regards, Amit.

Using DBAppender with an unreliable database connection

We are using logback 1.1.2 with slf4j 1.7.7. We have configured DBAppender to log to a SQL Server database from a Spring webapp under Tomcat using ch.qos.logback.core.db.DataSourceConnectionSource. This works fine, except that when the host reboots (this is Windows, after all), Tomcat restarts faster than SQL Server does, so when DataSourceConnectionSource is first started, it fails to connect to the database. Is there a way to detect this and retry the connection, or a way for the application to check DBAppender's state and tell it to reconnect if needed?
