Appending an hourly log line when idle

Hello all, I have a service which sits idle sometimes for days and doesn't log anything. This sometimes creates confusion that the process (or log collection) isn't working, but it actually just doesn't have work to do. Is there any logback feature that I could leverage to send an hourly "MARK" if nothing has gone through the appender? Or should I just add something in the app itself? Thanks in advance! -Mat

SMTP Appender always shows DEBUG info

Using 1.3.0-alpha5 (which is, admittedly, Alpha), SMTPAppenderBase.java calls session.setDebug(true) at line 124, which causes a lot of SMTP info to spam the console. This is probably a merge error made during the checkin of c01fde48c1b3ebb9a5066f6300fcf81be1e0965b. But if it isn't, I don't think this should be the default behavior because: 1. The next line is "if (session == null)", meaning that session can be null here, meaning that session.setDebug(...) can NPE. 2. I don't want debug info spammed to the console. If this is desired behavior, can I suggest passing a custom output stream to session that passes logger info to the logger in a way that I can squelch using regular logger configuration, for example as shown in Karl Richter's answer here: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/6995946/log4j-how-do-i-redirect-an-outp… Thanks for all the good work, I hope you find this helpful. How to output short exception when Marker is present, but full otherwise?

Hi, I want this: logger.debug("Test logging: ", new IllegalStateException("Wibble")); to give me a full stack trace, and this: logger.debug(MarkerFactory.getMarker("MINIMAL_EXCEPTION"), "Test logging: ", new IllegalStateException("Wibble")); to just output the class and message. I don't have Janino, and I'm trying to keep it all as small as possible (also not sure I could pay the price of expression evaluation for each message). The closest I've got is this: <evaluator name="DISPLAY_EX_EVAL" class="ch.qos.logback.classic.boolex.OnMarkerEvaluator"> <marker>MINIMAL_EXCEPTION</marker> </evaluator> <appender name="STDOUTPUT" class="ch.qos.logback.core.ConsoleAppender"> <encoder> <charset>UTF-8</charset> <pattern>%d{HH:mm:ss.SSS} [%thread] %-5level %logger{36} %line - %msg%ex{full, DISPLAY_EX_EVAL}%n</pattern> </encoder> </appender> <contextListener class="ch.qos.logback.classic.jul.LevelChangePropagator" /> But that doesn't output exception at all when the Marker is present. Release of logback version 1.3.0-alpha5

Hello all, I am happy to announce the release of logback version 1.3.0-alpha5. This version directly supports the fluent-API introduced in SLF4J 2.0.x. It also supports Jigsaw/Java9 modularization. Joran, logback's configuration system, has been rewritten to use an internal representation model which can be processed separately. Given the breadth of the changes, support for SiftingAppender and Groovy configuration have been dropped temporarily. No new features are available in this version. Future releases will gradually introduce new features made possible by Joran representation model. The 1.3.x series requires Java 8 at runtime. If you wish to build logback from source, you will need Java 9. vjdbc.jar Disables Logback?

I recently attempted to reintroduce vjdbc.jar (http://vjdbc.sourceforge.net/) to my project only to discover that on doing so, logback (slf4j) is disabled and all logging goes to stdout. Following are the applicable jars in my CLASSPATH: jcl-over-slf4j-1.6.1.jar jul-to-slf4j-1.7.24.jar log4j-over-slf4j-1.6.1.jar logback-access-1.0.13.jar logback-classic-1.0.13.jar logback-core-1.0.13.jar slf4j-api-1.6.1.jar vjdbc.jar The MANIFEST.MF in vjdbc.jar contains no classpath info nor does the jar contain a logback.xml, etc. How could introduction of this jar to my classpath disable logback altogether?
