Hi Again, Has anyone had any experience trying to do method tracing with LogBack? We are looking into using something like this: http://x-15.org/tracing.htm , or some other package, and have it write its results into LogBack. Thanks, Kim

Hi all, I'm looking for some logback and MySQL example. I know how to write an .xml file (from chapter 4) but how do I write the java file that writes some stuff to a DB? Please let me know. Thank You Greg

switching logging to LOGBACK [OSGI]

I'm just in the decision to switch logging from log4j to LOGBACK + slf4j my current OSGI installation: bundle com.springsource.org.apache.log4j -- exporting all log4j packages bundle myLog4jproperties -- fragment-Host: com.springsource.org.apache.log4j -- containing my log4j.-xml as configfile at root of sourcefolder this works well ------- now I'm using following bundles: bundle com.springsource.ch.qos.logback.core -- exporting logback.core packages bundle com.springsource.ch.qos.logback.classic -- importing logback.core -- exporting logback.classic packages -- exporting org-slf4j.impl bundle com.springsource.slf4j.api -- importing org-slf4j.impl -- exporting org.slf4j, org.slf4j.helpers, org.slf4j.spi bundle com.springsource.slf4j.org.apache.commons.logging -- importing org.slf4j, org.slf4j.spi -- exporting org.apache.commons.logging + impl this works well: * in my own bundles I can log directly to logback * 3rdparty bundles using JCL now are logging over slf4j I also have 3rdparty bundles using log4j, so I tried: bundle com.springsource.slf4j.org.apache.log4j -- importing org.slf4j, org.slf4j.spi -- exporting org.apache.log4j this fails :-( the 3rdPartyBundle is using log4j.xml, but this packages wasn't provided from the bridge log4j over slf4j so I still have to use log4j together with slf4j / logback. this works well :::: my questions::::::::::: * can I automatically convert my log4j.xml configfile into logback.xml ? * where to place the logback.xml ? I think, a fragment of logback.classic with logback.xml at root of sourcefolder would be good, or would you recommend logback.core ? * when using JCL over slf4j (logback) - am I right that then all configuration would be only into logback.xml ? get computer's name

Hi All, Simple question.... Is there a way to get the local-computers'-name? I have the config file with the following pattern: <pattern>%date{*dd*-*mm*-*yyyy*; HH:mm:ss:SSS} %level [%thread] %logger{10} [%file : %line] Class Name:%class Method Name:%M Line Number:%L %*msg*%n</ pattern> How can I get the computer's name that additionally to what's above?? Thanks for any suggestions.

log4j.xml and log4joverslf4j

...just trying to switch to slf4j + logback its an equinox OSGI app in my own bundles I was using log4j, so its easy to migrate, but one question: * I can convert log4j.properties files, but what about log4j.xml files ? I'm using some third party bundles with commons logging, and with no problems I'm using commons.logging over slf4j :-) another third party bundle uses log4j, but needs classes from package log4j.xml. it seems that you don't have this class in your log4j over slf4j bridge ? Throwable with Java 1.6 Style?

Why is there no way to do something like... logger.error("blah blah {} blah", exception, object); It seems that the only way to pass that in to the logger is to use if (logger.isErrorEnabled()) logger.error("blah blah " + object.toString() + " blah", e); or am I mistaken? It seems that this would be a useful function to make available. -Eric

Migrating LogBack with JUL and Log4j

Hi, My group is considering using LogBack for our project, and I'm trying to figure out there's a painless way to migrate both JUL logs and Log4j to LogBack? We are currently using some Log4j, but we also use EclipseLink which uses JUL. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Kim

Logback console plugin - relative time

Hello, /Problem/ In logback view (in Eclipse), using the default Pattern Layout "%relative %level [%thread] %logger{25} %message %nopex", I get as first part of the log strings the total time in milliseconds since first started my application for a given eclipse run, instead of the time in milliseconds since started my application. E.g., I see a time of 40000 as first log entry when running the application, not because the application is running since 40 seconds at logging time, but because the first time I ran my application for the eclipse session I am in has been started 40 seconds ago. /Test case/ With the following logback.xml: ----- <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <configuration> <appender name="STDOUT" class="ch.qos.logback.core.ConsoleAppender"> <layout class="ch.qos.logback.classic.PatternLayout"> <param name="Pattern" value="%relative %level [%thread] %logger{25} %message %nopex\n" /> </layout> </appender> <root> <level value="debug" /> <appender-ref ref="STDOUT" /> </root> <consolePlugin /> </configuration> ----- and the following Log.java class: ----- package main; import org.slf4j.Logger; import org.slf4j.LoggerFactory; public class Log { private static final Logger s_logger = LoggerFactory.getLogger(Log.class); public static void main(String[] args) { s_logger.info("Started."); } } ----- I get the following output: - in the "normal" Eclipse Console (that is, stdout), I invariably see (each time I start the application), the unique log entry "0 INFO [main] main.Log Started. " (This is the expected behaviour, AFAIU.) - in the logback view, after having started the application four times with several seconds interval each time, I see (BTW, how do you copy the contents in the clipboard?): ----- -47 INFO [main] main.Log Started. 13328 INFO [main] main.Log Started. 18703 INFO [main] main.Log Started. 49406 INFO [main] main.Log Started. ----- /Question/ Shouldn't the count start at zero each time I start the app? How can I get that behaviour in Logback view? /Tries and setup details/ Clicking "Clear Console" in Logback view does not change the behaviour. The LogBack console indeed clears, but the next time I start the application I see again a time number which is far greater than zero. This number will continue to grow until I restart Eclipse. Eclipse 3.4, and LogBack Console Plug-in version 1.1.0. I have observed this behaviour in Eclipse 3.3.2 as well, and on two different computers. Naturally the problem is the same with a simple configuration file as given in http://logback.qos.ch/consolePlugin.html ; STDOUT appender has been added in the test case above to show the difference in behaviour between the console and the logback view. Help with SMTPAppender configuration

Hi I'm unable to get the SMTPAppender working, I've got mail.jar and activation.jar on my classpath and I'm running an SMTP server on my localhost. When I generate log events of level ERROR no attempts are made to send messages according to my mail server logs. I'm not sure how to go about diagnosing the problem as logback does not log messages about itself.
