Try environment variables [1]:

Linux:
${HOME}/logs

Windows:
${USERPROFILE}/logs    (C:\Users\Tony\logs)
${APPDATA}/logs   (C:\Users\Tony\AppData\Roaming)

Linux or Windows:
${HOME:-${USERPROFILE}}/logs

     tries $HOME first; if it doesn't exist, it tries $USERPROFILE
