I'd obviously vote for a) but I can explain why b) wouldn't fly, too. If SLF4J would be bumped to 2.0 without staying binary-compatible with 1.5.x and you'd have artifacts where one would depend on 1.5.x and the other on 2.0.x then everything would explode.
