Can you provide some numbers concerning the "significant overhead"? I'm not in doubt about your findings, I'd just like to some values for further discussion.
You didn't ask me, but I have some results regarding this with Logback 0.9.15 and SLF4J 1.5.6. My finding is that there is not a lot of difference between passing 1 argument, or 3 arguments as Object[].
