logback receiver configuration issue

I am trying to run the logback example 'ReceiverExample.java' using the provided config file receiver1.xml. Can MDC values take a default

I have this pattern and it's working : <pattern>%d{HH:mm:ss} %-5p [%t] [%c{1}] [%X{amtrac.serviceName}] [%X{amtrac.method}] [%X{amtrac.clientProcessName}] [%X{identity_user_context_guid}] [%X{identity_user_context_username}] [%X{identity_user_context_partner_id}] [%X{amtrac.tx}] MESSAGE=[%m]%n</pattern> However, I would like to replace a NULL if any of the MDC is null as a default value so... <pattern>%d{HH:mm:ss} %-5p [%t] [%c{1}] [%X{amtrac.serviceName*:-NULL*}] [%X{amtrac.method*:-NULL*}] [%X{amtrac.clientProcessName*:-NULL*}] [%X{identity_user_context_guid*:-NULL*}] [%X{identity_user_context_username}] [%X{identity_user_context_partner_id}] [%X{amtrac.tx}] MESSAGE=[%m]%n</pattern> I tried it but it seems like it totally stops logging anything. Does Logback remove ANSI codes from messages? - 1.0.9

I'm using Logback 1.0.9. I've been doing a bit of work to make use of ANSI graphics renditions in the text I'm outputting; what I'm seeing is that when the ANSI-enhanced text passes through Logback, the ANSI formatting is stripped out. [image: Inline image 1] As you can see in the above snapshot; if I print the text to System.out, the ANSI codes (to make some of the text red) are honored. When the same string is passed to Logback, the ANSI does not appear. I did a look through the Logback code and could not find anything that would explain this. Perhaps I missed it, or missed something in the JDK libraries. In any case, what I'd like is to be able to see the ANSI-enhanced text in the console, when the output is triggered by Logback. -- Howard M. Job Logger configuration

My plan is to use the sifting log appender to put the logs into a hierarchy on the filesystem as the {job_group}/{job_name}/{instance_id} I know I can pull multiple values out of the MDC for use in the pattern layout but I am having trouble using them in the filename. I am not sure my above approach will work for directory names but according to the docs it should work at least for the filename. My second question is how do I keep my job logs out of the main log? how to override the LogbackMDCAdapter

Custom Appender Substitute Logger issue

I have a custom appender that needs a backup logger in case there is a network issue or some other common error (see sample code below). I'm running into the error indicating that my backup logger will not work because it was created during the default configuration phase. It directed me towards the docs on substituteLogger which suggested to set up my appender in a separate file and then configure it after the default configuration phase. Are there any other options? Is there a better way to deal w/ the backup logger? Is there a more general purpose way to do this? Maybe a composite appender? Any help would be appreciated. logging multiple main programs

Hey, I have been using logback for some time with monolithic java batch apps (ETL). I am a very part time jave programmer at my job (10% at most) I now am working on an application that has two main programs but uses 90% of the same code base. So one project, two jar file artifacts. (two programs labeled people and position) The logging is pretty simple * one log file for each run * log files are denoted with people_timestamp.log or position_timestamp.log * error logging sends email as well as writes to the log file this is my problem: When I run the first main program that is working it creates both log files and one is empty. I only want the one log file that is needed created. I'm sure I'm making this way more complicated than it needs to be.
