Hello, I have logback configured so that code bundled in 2 different war files under tomcat will write to the same log file which rolls daily. It's also marked as prudent. I believe my configuration follows the guidelines from ( http://logback.qos.ch/manual/appenders.html#prudentWithRolling) <configuration> <appender name="A1" class="ch.qos.logback.core.rolling.RollingFileAppender"> <prudent>true</prudent> <encoder> <pattern>%d{dd-MM HH:mm:ss} [%t] %c %5p %m%n</pattern> </encoder> <rollingPolicy class="ch.qos.logback.core.rolling.TimeBasedRollingPolicy"> <FileNamePattern>${catalina.base}/logs/myapp.%d{yyyy-MM-dd}.log</FileNamePattern> <MaxHistory>30</MaxHistory> </rollingPolicy> </appender> <root level="INFO"> <appender-ref ref="A1"/> </root> </configuration> My problem is that I get lots of java.nio.channels.OverlappingFileLockException. ... java.nio.channels.FileChannel.lock(FileChannel.java:860) ch.qos.logback.core.FileAppender.safeWrite(FileAppender.java:187) ch.qos.logback.core.FileAppender.writeOut(FileAppender.java:204) ch.qos.logback.core.OutputStreamAppender.subAppend(OutputStreamAppender.java:212) ... After reading the docs for OverlappingFileLockException, my hunch is that the 2 different loggers, loaded by different class loaders within the same JVM are both trying to lock the file, unbeknownst to each other. This violates the rules for FileChannel.lock, which seem to ignore the issue of locks among multiple class loaders within 1 JVM. Has anyone run into this issue before? Is there a simple workaround that I'm not thinking of? Thanks, Chris

Replacing Tomcat7 Logging with Logback?

Hi All, Is there a good tutorial or documentation on replacing Tomcat's default logging with logback? So far my searches turn up http://logback.qos.ch/access.html which only seems to work with access logs, not the actual server logging itself. Thanks, James

No more JMSAppender documentation

Hi, The JMSAppender and its subclasses are still provided with Logback, but the documentation for those classes has been removed from the site. It seems it has happened between 24 october 2010 and 19 november 2010 (between 0.9.24 and 0.9.26 versions). I have found a way to access the old version of the documentation with the Wayback Machine, but it's not really a convenient one. Any idea why it's gone and if it will be restored? Do you plan to remove those classes from Logback? Thanks for your great log library. Stéphane

Question of dropping logs when using SimpleSocketServer and SocketAppender

Hi, I've got some issues while using Socket to send logs to a central repository. When the logs generated from client side is slow, everything works fine. However, if the logs from client side is very fast, it looks like logs entries will be dropped significantly during transmit. I did an experiment to confirm it: int i = 0 ; while (i < 10000) { log.info(i + " : ======="); i ++; } And on the sever side, the received log looks like: 2013-09-12 17:59:09,174 INFO [main] - 0 : ======= 2013-09-12 17:59:09,175 INFO [main] - 5 : ======= 2013-09-12 17:59:09,175 INFO [main] - 10 : ======= 2013-09-12 17:59:09,176 INFO [main] - 13 : ======= 2013-09-12 17:59:09,177 INFO [main] - 17 : ======= 2013-09-12 17:59:09,178 INFO [main] - 21 : ======= Is there any way to avoid this from happening? What I have read from doc is logback is based on TCP so eventual consistency should be able to achieved, or may be my understanding is not correct? Thanks if anyone can give me some hint. Programmatic configuration

Hi I would like to handle logback configuration programmatically - without files (XML, Groovy, etc). My problem is that I cant find an obvious way to override the fallback behavior in ContextInitializer.autoConfig, which ultimately result that a ConsoleAppender is created by BasicConfigurator (since no URL was found for Joran). It would be nice to if BasicConfigurator could be replaced for something else, maybe using http://docs.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/api/java/util/ServiceLoader.html or something similar. Maybe adding an modified copy of BasicConfigurator (but with same fully qualified classname) first on classpath would be possible? But this feels more like a hack. Cheers, -Kristoffer

Level management on Logback

Hi, I have a doubt. If on my config file (xml) I set logger level as "Debug" and then from my java class i do: logger.error("some message Log {}", this); What wold be the result on my log file? Does Logback a comparation between logger level and event level and depend on that it does the logging?Do i have a log based on debug or based on error? Thanks. Gastón

Use of DefaultThrowableRenderer

Hi guys, I have some doubts about implementing methods from DefaultThrowableRenderer. Can you please give me some basic example to figure out how render() or printFirstLine() method it works?I can't find any example. What advantages I have using render(StringBuilder sbuf, ILoggingEvent event) ? Can i use this render method on a Layout different from HTMLayout ? Thanks

SiftingAppender lose dynamic configuration in Web application in EAR

Hello, For a project I am using a SiftingAppender on top of a RollingFileAppender defined in a logback.xml. <appender name="SIFT" class="ch.qos.logback.classic.sift.SiftingAppender"> <discriminator class="ch.qos.logback.classic.sift.JNDIBasedContextDiscriminator"> ... </discriminator> <sift> <appender name="FILE-${contextName}" class="ch.qos.logback.core.rolling.RollingFileAppender"> <file>logs/${contextName}.log</file> ... The logback configuration is shared in an EAR for multiple web applications. I update the RollingFileAppender file value at deployment in a ServletContextListener, replacing the ${contextName} with the context-root of the application being deployed. For instance, Web Application MyWebApp1, configured to log to logs/mywebapp1.log is deployed to /ContextA/MyWebApp1. So Iupdate logs/mywebapp1.log to logs/contexta_mywebapp1.log. It should be just the ServletContextListener logging to the initial file. My issue is that it occurs that the application /ContextA/MyWebApp1 switch back to logs/mywebapp1.log. It seems the programmatic configuration I did at deployment is lost. My question is, finally :), is there a way for logback to detect configuration loss and launch programmatic reconfiguration ?
