As part of my work on Log4j 2.0 I discovered that there is significant overhead in using varargs. The technique used by SLF4J of providing 1, 2, 3 parameters and then 3 + varargs reduces the overhead considerably. It is the responsibility of the container, e.g. JBoss, GF, SpringSource DM Server, to allow the end-user to select a logging framework. If you wish, you can implement your own binding mechanism based on a more sophisticated strategy. (It should be very to have slf4j-api use your strategy). The ability to deploy multiple WAR files in a single EAR is a common requirement. More generally, duplicate entries on the classpath don't produce an invalid classpath. Whether this is caused by a WebLogic bug or not, the result certainly looks like slf4j being dumb.
